Hackathon: Hack for the Future of Defense

For and in partnership with: 7th mechanized brigade, South Skåne regiment, The Swedish Armed Forces

Why join?

The Swedish Army is undergoing a massive transformation. Digital development is not “nice-to-have” – it is the backbone of future defense.

At this hackathon, you will:

  • Build for real: Solve problems identified by the 7th mechanized brigade.
  • Get the chance to have your idea trialed in the Armed Forces’ digital experiments already this fall.
  • Network: Meet fellow developers, startups, students, and defense professionals.
  • Show your skills: Get recognition for your code and ideas in one of Sweden’s most dynamic tech environments.

The mission

Hack for the future of the Swedish Armed Forces’ command systems. Work on the open platform for military management.

Create ideas, prototypes, plugins, or demos that demonstrate what’s possible – and inspire further development.

Focus areas

You will get to work on a classic “warfighting function” :

  • Command & Control (C2): How can we plan, lead, and sync operations in real time?

 Who are you?

  • Hacker, AI enthusiast, software developer, engineer, open-source tinkerer.
  • You love solving real-world problems.
  • You want to see your code used where it truly matters.
  • Individual or group; you will get to form a team in the next stel

Practical info

  • When: October 21 –Registration and breakfast from 08:30, hacking starts 09:00–21:00
  • Where: The Tech Hub, Alfahuset 3, Ideon Science Park
  • Food, fika, coffee: Included during the day

Register your interest, and we’ll get back to you with details and more information about the hacker assignment. (Also see more info further below).

Award and recognition

The winning team will receive a reward and also be recognized for their achievement across our social media channels. We believe in celebrating innovation and giving visibility to the brilliant minds behind the solutions.

Background checks

To ensure a safe and fair event, we will conduct random background checks among registered participants.

These checks will be conducted after registration and before the start of the hackathon. The process is designed to be discreet and respectful, while helping us create a secure environment for all participants.

On the Challenge:

We are looking for applications or changes in the system that make it possible to prioritize information and, above all, make it easy to get an overview — both for a senior commander and for a platoon leader in combat who is in need of critical information.

The 7th Brigade is currently conducting experiments with command support systems that utilize digital technology to manage the information environment and the rapid developments on the battlefield. The purpose is for the brigade to become faster and thereby more dangerous to an enemy. Today, incoming data is processed by staff members.

Modern combat situations generate a large amount of data from different sensors, while at the same time, today’s battles require that commanders make decisions faster and that the right unit can act on those decisions. The 7th Brigade is now testing how technology can be used to more quickly analyze and convert information into decision-making support. Commanders and functions need to receive the right information at the right time and in a simpler way than today, whether it concerns logistics or combat operations.

An important capability that the brigade is investigating is the possibility for one or several applications in a command support system to automatically sort and structure information according to function and present it graphically. It should be easy to find the right and current information both for staff-level commanders and for a platoon leader in combat.

In logistics, for example, data can be sent directly from a sensor, such as a company quartermaster reporting the amount of ammunition and fuel in the unit. This information is processed together with similar data from different companies and functions. It is then transformed into clear recommendations for the logistics or technical commander at the battalion level. In the same way, the targeting chain can analyze data from several different sensors, propose targets, and recommend prioritization, as well as how to neutralize them with available systems.

Through these experiments, the 7th Brigade strengthens its ability to exploit the full potential of technology and stay one step ahead on the battlefield of the future.
